29 year old Katie van de Pas had a running temperature and serious cough during her third trimester in pregnancy. She was diagnosed with the flu and the doctor recommended a Panadol.
A couple of days later Mrs van de Pas" flu almost lost her life and that of her unborn little girl-Dinah.
"I wasn"t getting any better and the next night I was coughing up blood and coughed so hard I thought I"d broken a rib," Mrs van de Pas disclosed in an interview.
A baby from coma: The 29 year old mother from New Zealand gave birth to her baby girl Dinah via C-section while she was in a coma, after developing a severe case of swine flu at 34 weeks pregnant.
"A nightmare": Mrs van de Pas was faced with intense cough that was so bad that thought she had broken a rib, but doctors told her to take a Panadol and rest. A week later she gave birth to Dinah (pictured above) while she was in a coma.
"My husband Luke was wiping me over with a damp cloth the next day to keep my temperature down and we went up to the after-hours clinic where the doctor took me straight through - I remember shallow breathing but I didn"t know how bad it was." she says.
After being informed that she had a dangerously low oxygen level of 72 per cent, the 29 year old was rushed to hospital in an ambulance where she was taken for a chest X-ray and labelled a priority one by nurses.
"The doctor thought the machine was malfunctioning my oxygen levels were so low," Mrs van de Pas continued.
"he had to put it on his own finger to make sure it wasn"t."
She was eventually sedated and remembers the nurse talking about the baby before she was knocked into unconsciousness.
