The Lanston Turtleneck Tank – Camel
I woke up one morning and after lingering over my newspaper and coffee a moment too long, I grabbed my water bottle and rushed to the lengthening-and-toning class where a spot had been kept for me.
From my observation, most of the women in the studio who wore high-tech leggings and effortlessly pulled-back hair—had strong, lithe physiques like that of Gigi Hadid and Miranda Kerr. Later on, we were led through a battery of core-targeted exercises: sitting in a V-shape while clenching our midsections, endless iterations of front and side planks, and lying on our backs while lifting each leg ever so slightly off the floor. Afterwards, the instructor took us through a few brief pliés and arm lifts.
The truth is- getting to the studio had been more difficult than the exercises themselves and this was possibly due to the fact that I longed to move my limbs more, but class was over. As I took a sip of water, I began to wonder if toiling away at my core at the expense of the other 75 percent of my body was even worth it.
So what exactly do I mean by "core". We all agree that it’s the network of muscles surrounding the spine, but the consensus ends there. Some others, refer to the area from the bottom of the rib cage to the pelvis while others say it starts at the shoulders and goes as far down as the hip flexors.
Whatever your definition is or whatever the class you attend the most—barre, Pilates, yoga, even dance cardio—the importance of core training is as blindly accepted today as was the wisdom of going “fat-free” at the turn of the millennium.
