Customizing and creating her own jeans has become part of who Joan Smalls is as a person.
In Smalls words “Back when I was thirteen, I was so skinny I couldn’t fit into most pairs,”
“I had to learn to sew on my mother’s sewing machine to sew up the inseam so they would fit tighter on me!” says Smalls.
From making DIY improvements to her denim, the model has truly come a long way and luckily for her; she’s now debuting her second collection for True Religion, which involves a cool crop of skinny jeans with zipper detailing and plenty of dark-wash flares.

From the beginning, her denim choices weren"t always so chic. Way back when Smalls was a teenager, she was highly involved in the low-slung and crop top look, which is now becoming a part of modern day fashion.
“I didn’t follow the trends that were in Puerto Rico at the time,” Smalls discloses.
I would watch music video stations like MTV, and I would get inspired by Aaliyah and wear the slouchy baggy pants! Also, I’d be wearing these denim overalls that were baggy everywhere.”
Today, she has gone from loose-fit ’90s pairs for her True Religion pieces, including skinny black denim jeans with leather stripes on the sides to jeans with zipper detailing on the pockets. These new set of jeans from Smalls are quite fitting, super sexy, and edgy at the same time.
On how she prefers to wear them, it"s as easy as ABC.
“I wear them with a cool pair of sneakers and an easy T-shirt. Then I just throw on a red lip,”
“If you are super casual and your makeup looks really good, it dresses up the outfit.” says Smalls.
