This look takes me back to uni days, when money was incredibly scarce (couldn’t stop laughing when my cousin told me how she had to choose between buying hair and food and ended up foregoing the latter, ha!) and majority of my time was spent trying to churn out two to three thousand word essays.
Man, uni was quite a journey. I grew in more ways than I realised and found myself understanding the true meaning of hard work. Sometimes I feel like I pushed myself the hardest during that time. In my last semester, I worked as a tutor, had a part time job at an HR company, prepared and run extra classes for kids from a nearby informal settlement every Saturday and all the while trying to achieve my best grades yet. I had a couple of break downs during that semester but had to push on as I knew I needed the money, experience and good grades.
It’s not always easy to keep pushing yourself and I think sometimes the older you get, the more frustrated/complacent/entitled you become and that only gets in the way. You begin to assume that the world owes you a break but as Warsan Shire put it, “the world doesn’t owe you a single wretched thing.”
So here’s to pushing through all the tribulations, bad days, negative people, fatigue and snide comments that might otherwise deter you. Hope each day brings you one step closer to your goals!
Love and love.
