Imagine spending your honey moon in an avalanche?
Well, that was what happened to Sam and Alexandra Chappate. The newlyweds found themselves clinging to ice axes in other to avoid being carried away by the horrific ice and snow. In a terrifying episode, the couple spoke about how the narrowly escaped death as an avalanche brought about by the Nepal earthquake came upon their Everest camp.
While the horrifying earthquake brought down some of the famous landmarks, the scared couple had to hold on to ice axes in other to avoid being swept away by deadly snow and ice.
This happens to be their second experience in Everest’s most deadly disasters after they tried climbing the world’s highest mountain and experienced an avalanche which hit Khumbu Icefall and killed several people. In other to fund a second attempt, they mortgaged their flat in Notting Hill, West London.
In a post on their internet blog, they described the scary period when they experienced a quake hit during their second bid to reach the summit.
The couple, both 28, wrote: ‘The earthquake hit about 30 minutes after we had crossed the icefall and found our tents. The ground began to shake violently before we could do anything and Dan Mazur (our group leader) kept shouting- Get out of your tents and grab your ice axes”.
We staggered out to see an avalanche coming straight at us. A blast of wind knocked us down but we were able to get up and run to shelter behind some tents and anchor ourselves with our axes.
‘We focused on keeping an air hole so we could breathe in the powder.’
