When Love Fails When Love Fails

The circumstances under which me and Teniola dated was very unique. Let me explain. We grew up together, lived on the same street, went to the same primary school, secondary school and university. Our fathers were bosom friends and rumour had it that we were betrothed to each other.

In addition to that, my dad frowned at the idea of me with any other lady that wasn’t Temiola and such was the case for Teniola too. Every attempt to bring a male friend who wasn’t me to her house led to a quarrel between her and her dad. It’s was like our destiny had been decided. It didn’t take time before we started dating in our final year on campus. Honestly, it seemed like love and I was ready to give my best to that relationship but we knew that something was missing.

Two years after we graduated from the tertiary institution, our parents began to plan our wedding behind our backs….it was that serious. Teniola had gone on a one year training program and her return changed a lot of things. Normally, if you haven’t seen your supposed beloved boyfriend/girlfriend in a year, there should be this joy in your heart but it wasn’t there. The night before the day I was supposed to see Teniola, I brought out my Bible and read 1Corinthians 13:4-8 and figured it out, whatever I had for Teniola had failed.

The next day, we sat over a meal at a Chinese restaurant, from the look on Teniola’s face, I knew her heart was somewhere else. I opened the discussion and soon, Teniola poured out her mind to me. “Tayo, I’m in love with someone else”. The words were supposed to shake me but I simply smiled an felt relief crawling inside me.

At the end of that day, we broke up with a hug and promised to keep contact as friend. I was so glad. That night, I held a meeting with my parents and broke the news to them. These were the words of my mother “But I thought you loved Teniola”. I simply smiled and replied “love never fails”. She looked at me as if expecting more explanation. I then smiled and voiced gently “When love fails, it’s not love”.
