The interview

The following are excerpts from an interview that our beauty queen, Flaviana gave quite recently:

Flaviana Matata – As a goodwill Ambassador

My name is Flaviana Matata. I am from Tanzania. I am a model, signed up with Wilhelmina Models.

I personally, I am a Malaria survivor. Malaria is such common in Tanzania. Tanzania is such a beautiful country and people are very friendly. Community back home is such that, you just treat everybody as family.

When I was a kid, I a Tomboy. I used to play soccer with my friends. In school, I took sciences studies, and when I was in college, I did Electrical Engineering. So, I am an Electrician now…. I can do the wiring and fix any problem in your house.

Flaviana Matata – As a fashion model

When I am in New York, I miss everything about home. I love modelling, I love modelling, and I am happy that I am pursuing it. Because whatever I am doing here, it helps a lot back home. I am doing a lot of charity work.

I grew up in a family where we are used to helping each other. I remember, when I was a kid, I used to sneak out, and go and help my friends.

Things we take for granted here, means a lot back home.

Flaviana Matata – As a change Advocate

I work with, MALARIA NO MORE, for almost 3 years now. A child dies almost every minute because of malaria. That tells you how bad that disease it.

Malaria affected my childhood in so many ways. First of all. I couldn’t go to school, because I was sick. Again, my parents, especially my mum, couldn’t go to work, because Iwas sick and she had to stay home and take care of me. And I lost one of my very very good childhood friends, becuase of malaria. Bright kid, but she got sick and they couldn’t save her life.

And I am like, “When will this end?”, you know. Because, I keep saying it (malaria) is preventable, so what are we suppose to do? Take, “MALARIA NO MORE”, they are doing a great job.

To be honest, by ending malaria, they will be helping a lot and lots of people. Their economy will grow, because they will be able to go back to work. Kids, will be able to go to school. And there will be no more deaths. I want to tell people, “Talking is very cheap, we have to take ACTION!”. Malaria sucks.
